About RedGum Honey

Red Gum honey is an Australian active healing honey. It’s produced by bees visiting the delicate, creamy white flowers of the Eucalyptus Camaldulenisistree (also known as the River Red Gum Tree) that is native to many parts of Australia.

Although the tree is common and it’s use as a timber tree is widespread, Red Gum honey is a valuable, prized asset – Eucalyptus Camaldulenisistrees only flower for two months (December and January) every two years. Even then, how much each tree flowers, is unpredictable. Red Gum honey is therefore considered a rare, luxury product.

During flowering, if the flowers are abundant, they produce a lot of pollen, which is great news for local bees. It keeps them and their broods thriving and also allows them to store pollen for when it becomes scarcer.

But a good flowering season is good news for us humans too, as Red Gum honey has many health benefits.

The Benefits of Red Gum Honey

Our Red Gum honeys have a TA rating of 25+. This means that they’re effective at inhibiting microbial growth. This microbial growth can be in the form of bacteria, say in an infected skin wound, viral, for example a viral sore throat, cough or cold, or a yeast infection as is the case with candida.

Taking a spoonful of Red Gum honey each day at the first sign of a cold can help reduce the severity and longevity of the cold.

Red Gum honey also has natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which helps to support a healthy immune system and good overall health. It also supports a healthy gut, which scientists are now discovering has benefits for the wider body and even our mental health.

Marri is the traditional name used by Aboriginals, most people know it as Redgum. All of our honey is cold extracted to keep the honey in its natural state, this is the main difference between our honey and most shop bought honey. Red Gum honey has a relatively low level of glucose (20%) and a higher level of fructose (80%) and therefore tastes less sweet than other honeys. As honey is a natural product, it’s normal for these quantities to fluctuate slightly but being less sweet makes it ideal for reaping the benefits without the intense sugary highs and lows.

The rich dark coloured Redgum honey has a distinctive full bodied fresh fruit almost plum flavour, less sweet than other honey varieties and a richly golden colour. Redgum is fantastically versatile and can be used in almost any recipe from smoothies to marinades.

The use of honey as an alternative therapy to combat infection by antibiotic resistant organisms is gaining ground with new research confirming the medicinal benefits of the natural product.
